GMR Warora Energy Limited Wins National Energy Conservation Award, 2023

- The award was conferred by the Hon’ble President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu.
- GWEL won the award under the Power Plant Category of more than 100 MW.
- This is the third consecutive time GWEL has been conferred with the award.

New Delhi, December 18, 2023: GMR Warora Energy Limited (GWEL), a part of the GMR Power and Urban Infrastructure Limited (GPUIL), has been awarded the first prize at the 33rd National Energy Conservation Awards 2023, under the Power Plant Category of more than 100 MW. This is the third consecutive time GWEL has won this award.

The prestigious award was conferred by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu on National Energy Conservation Day, celebrated on 14th December.  

Bureau of Energy Efficiency, under the guidance of Ministry of Power, recognizes and encourages endeavors of industrial units, institutions, and establishments in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with the National Energy Conservation Awards. This is the 33rd edition of its series covering all types of industrial sectors like Thermal Power plants, Automobiles, Buildings, Cement, etc. 

Commenting on the momentous occasion, Mr. Srinivas Bommidala, Business Chairman, Energy and International Airports, GMR Group said, “Receiving such a prestigious award from the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu further encourages us to continue to strive for excellence. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ashis Basu, CEO-Energy, GPUIL said “This recognition is a testimony of our efforts in achieving highest standards in operational efficiency by optimising auxillary power consumption and improving the heat rate. GMR Warora Energy Limited won the prestigious ‘National Energy Conservation Award - 2023’ and we are committed to continually work towards our ESG goals.”.

“A total of 102 power plants across India were competing for this prestigious award, of these only four power plants were nominated for felicitation and GWEL emerged as the winner. Energy conservation journey in GWEL flagged off in 2015 and since then GWEL has taken many initiatives which have resulted in savings of 7.76 crore units of electrical energy & 2.94 lakhs of MCal of thermal energy over the last three years.

GWEL boasts of 600 MW (2X300 MW) operational coal based power plant located in Chandrapur, Maharashtra. It is strategically located near the industrial belt and high growth oriented western region. GWEL has a long term PPA for 200 MW with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), 150 MW with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) and has recently won a bid for 150 Mw PPA for supply of power to Haryana Discoms for five years starting April 2024.
