Delhi and Hyderabad, two prime locations of India that houses India's busiest airports led by GMR. These airports are also ranked amongst the country's greenest airports for their persistent efforts towards safety and sustainability of environment. Once at these airports, travelers are welcomed with lush green canvas right from the approach road till the terminals- connecting them with Mother Nature.

The landscape at both the locations provide a strong visual identity through the use of simple, yet bold and aesthetic hardscape treatment, planting statements and streetscape expressions. It comprises mainly of entry experience, streetscapes, rotaries and central park. Plants used here are well adapted to local climatic conditions with attractive foliage and flowers to provide an ever-changing colorful scenario throughout the year. As a whole, they build a sense of beauty and splendor for the passengers, presenting a soothing ambience and a zone for comfortable relaxation.

At Delhi Airport, Environment Sustainability Management is an integral part of business strategy, which helps in achieving credibility and business sustainability. The airport has carried out extensive flora and fauna studies to determine the biodiversity values that exist within the airport boundary. It has carried out proper landscaping in over 100 acres of area and extensive tree plantation around the airport with native and adaptive plant species. Entire landscaping is irrigated with automatic water conserving irrigation system that uses treated waste water.

In its persistent effort to promote greenery and enhance the natural beauty in and around its vicinity, Delhi Airport launched a mega plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day. As part of this drive, the airport is committed to plant a total of 6,000 saplings of indigenous tree variety in phased manner over the next one year. Tree saplings that would be planted during this drive are primarily indigenous trees including Cassia fistula, Lagerstroemia flosreginae, Schleichera oleosa, Mimusops elengi, Bauhinia variegate, Anthocephalus cadamba, Terminalia arjuna, Ficus virens , Azadirachta indica, Bergera koenigii, Moringa oleifera, Butea monosperma, Crataeva adansonii etc.

This year, Delhi Airport also launched India's largest state-of-the-art airport nursery spread across more than 400,000 square feet area near the airport, to meet its plantation and beatification needs. The nursery homes more than 1.16 lakh indoor plants variety with some exotic plants brought from Thailand and Indonesia which help cut down the carbon-footprint and maintain the highest standards of air quality level in the airport vicinity each plantation season.

At Hyderabad Airport, monumental hardscape statements exhibit natural stone of site itself, used in contemporary fashion, portrays the rural and natural characteristics of the surrounding rugged and natural environment. A total of 211 acres of area at the airport is under intensive landscape with 15,000 trees, 17 lakh shrubs and ground covers, 65,000 trees and 2.1 Lakh Sq. Mt. of lawns apart from Air side grassing of 360 acres.

The landscape of Hyderabad Airport follows 4-tier design concept, in which first comes the grass which connects the approach road; this is followed by the green ground cover with the maximum height of 30 cms; shrubs rising up to the height of 1 metre comes next followed by trees which gives a green frame to the entire theme of landscaping along the airport approach road and ancillary buildings of the airport. Once passengers enter the airport premises, they are greeted with a blooming expanse of sloped planters, curvilinear walls, palms, ground cover and xerophytic plants. Car park areas also have been aesthetically arranged as rock boulders, fountains, shrubs and towering palms.

Inside the terminal, there are over 15,000 plants of various species, type and heights displayed at various locations of the building. All plants rotated at frequent intervals with fresh, disease free and healthy stock plants maintained at the airport's nursery. A dedicated work force of trained gardeners nurture and maintain the displayed indoor plants in the Terminal Building.

Water is one of the key elements required for the efficient, hygienic and customer friendly airport operation, thus water management is one of the major focus areas of both the airports. The key objectives of the airport's operation team are- Sustainable development and management of water resources by continual assessment, conservation, augmentation, protection from pollution and safe distribution. In order to reduce the dependency on fresh water, the airports follow the 3R model i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recharge water.

In September 2019, Hyderabad Airport became India's first airport to induct a Cloud-based Central Irrigation Control System to control the intricate Automatic Irrigation System across the 80 acres of landscape spread along the 8.4 km stretch of the airport spine road. The system controls all these Site Controllers with online irrigation commands in real-time and round-the-clock.
