A Story of India's First Net Zero and Water-Positive Airport

30 December 2025

On a busy morning at Delhi Airport, thousands of passengers rush through the terminals, grabbing coffee, checking in luggage, and preparing for their journeys. But something remarkable is happening behind the scenes, something that is quietly transforming Indian aviation.

Every coffee cup, every food wrapper, every drop of water used in this massive facility is part of an extraordinary sustainability story. And it is a story that positions Delhi Airport as a pioneer among Indian airports.

When an Airport Becomes Water-Positive

Not long ago, Indira Gandhi International Airport faced a challenge that many Indian cities struggle with - groundwater stress. The airport was consuming more water than the local environment could sustainably provide. But GMR Group, through Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), saw this as an opportunity to innovate.

Today, that same airport has achieved something remarkable: it has become India's first major airport above 70 Mn Pax capacity to attain water- neutrality status. This means Delhi Airport now gives back more water to the environment than it takes. A complete transformation!

At the Water Innovation Summit 2025 in New Delhi, this achievement was formally recognized when DIAL received honours for completing Scope I Water Neutrality under the NITI Aayog - CII Water Neutrality Framework. For an airport handling over 70 million passengers annually, becoming water-positive isn't just impressive, it is revolutionary.

This milestone reinforces airport sustainability as more than just a buzzword. It is proof that even the busiest infrastructure can operate in harmony with nature.

The Journey to Zero Waste

But the water story is just one chapter in Delhi Airport's green transformation. The other chapter involves something we all generate but rarely think about - waste.

Between November 27-29, 2025, at the 23rd Green Building Congress in Mumbai, Delhi Airport received the IGBC Net Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum certification for Terminals 1, 2, and 3. This makes it the first and only airport above 70 Mn Pax capacity in India to achieve this recognition. A true milestone for green airports nationwide.

Here's what makes this achievement extraordinary: Delhi Airport successfully diverts approximately 95% of its municipal solid waste away from landfills. In practical terms, imagine all the food waste from restaurants, packaging materials from shops, and operational debris from daily activities, 95% of it never reaches a landfill.

How does it work? The GMR Group implemented a comprehensive waste management system that includes two-bin and four-bin segregation, a Material Recovery Facility, organic waste composters, and real-time waste tracking. Every piece of waste has a purpose, whether it is recycling, composting, or resource recovery.

What It Means to Be a Net Zero Airport

The concept of net zero airports is gaining traction globally, but few have achieved what Delhi Airport has accomplished. Being net zero means reimagining every operational process through an environmental lens.

For sustainable aviation to become reality, airports must lead the way. They are not just transit points, they are small cities that operate 24/7, consuming enormous resources and generating substantial waste. When an airport like Delhi transforms its operations to achieve net zero waste and water-positive status, it sends a powerful message: sustainability at scale is possible.

The GMR Group's approach to airport sustainability demonstrates that environmental responsibility and operational excellence aren't competing priorities. They are complementary goals that, when pursued together, create better outcomes for everyone.

A Global Leadership Position

Delhi Airport's dual achievement places it among global leaders in sustainable aviation. Already holding Asia's first Level 5 Carbon Accreditation for airports in above 70 Mn Pax capacity category, adding net zero waste and water-positive status creates a comprehensive sustainability profile.

Other green airports worldwide are watching and learning. When one of the world's busiest airports proves that such transformations are achievable, it creates a ripple effect across the industry.

Why Every Traveller Should Care

You might think these certifications are just corporate achievements, disconnected from your travel experience. But they are not.

When you walk through Delhi Airport's terminals, you're experiencing the benefits of these initiatives. Cleaner facilities, better air quality, and more efficient operations all stem from sustainable practices. The airport's waste management systems ensure hygienic environments, while water conservation guarantees consistent service quality.

Beyond personal experience, there's a broader impact. Aviation contributes to global emissions, and airports significantly affect local environments. When major hubs embrace airport sustainability, they reduce the industry's overall environmental footprint. Your journey through a green airport contributes to a larger positive change.

Your Role in the Story

Sustainable aviation requires partnership between airports and travellers. You can support these efforts through simple actions: use segregation bins correctly, minimize single-use plastics, carry reusable water bottles, and spread awareness about green airports like Delhi.

Every small action multiplies across millions of passengers, creating significant collective impact.

A New Chapter for Indian Aviation

As climate challenges intensify, airports that build water-positive and zero-waste systems today are preparing for tomorrow's realities. Delhi Airport isn't just responding to current environmental concerns, it is anticipating future challenges and building resilience into its operations.

Delhi Airport's achievements of becoming India's first and only Net Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum certified airport and the first major airport to achieve water-positive status, mark a turning point for Indian aviation.

These aren't just certificates or statistics. They represent a fundamental shift in how airports operate, proving that environmental stewardship and growth can coexist. And sustainable aviation is no more an aspiration but a reality.

The story of net zero airports and water positivity in India begins here, at Delhi Airport, where GMR Group has shown that the future of aviation is undeniably green.
