GMR Airports Limited (GMR Aero) marked a significant milestone on 28th July 2025 by officially commencing operations of Delhi Duty Free at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). With this transition GMR Aero emerged as India and South Asia’s largest Duty-Free operator.

This move reinforces GMR Aero’s position as a dominant force in the travel retail market. It signals a strategic shift in how airport retail is envisioned, experienced and delivered in India. With Hyderabad, Kannur, and Goa (Manohar International Airport) already under its arm, the addition of Delhi complements its growing portfolio as well its non-aero revenue base. A Seamless Transition Backed by Strategic Planning

The journey began with winning of the bid in April 2024. The license agreement signing followed in August 2024. GMR Aero worked closely with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition from the agreement signing date to officially taking it over. Once the previous concessionaire’s tenure concluded, the operations were commenced. This enabled a seamless handover without any disruptions to passengers.

This disciplined approach in execution shows maturity in managing a complex transition, especially given the scale of India’s busiest airport. There is no scope for chaos at the key gateway to India – Delhi International Airport.
