12 November 2021

GMR led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has set up a state-of-the-art 85-bed Dedicated COVID Healthcare Centre at Terminal 2 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Dedicated COVID Healthcare Centre (DCHC) is first-of-its-kind facility and a giant step in providing dedicated healthcare facility for airport employees during the anticipated third wave of the pandemic.

The second wave of pandemic hit the nation hard during which people were seen struggling hard for a hospital bed or oxygen cylinder for their critically ill near and dear ones. Taking a cue from it, GMR led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) decided to establish a COVID care centre in collaboration with renowned Medanta Hospital.

DIAL has the obligation to keep the airport operational and functional at all times. Since the onset of the COVID pandemic, many of airport employees had to suffer to avail healthcare facilities. DIAL is extending support with this set up to help in predominantly admitting DIAL's employees, support staff and their family members, as they are crucial for airport operations.

The facility has been set up with special focus on children, who are feared to be impacted by the third wave of the pandemic.

DIAL and Medanta had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in August 2021 for setting up of this facility for airport employees.

Minister of Civil Aviation, Government of India, Sri Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated the facility in the presence of MD-Airports, GMR Group, Mr. GBS Raju, CEO-DIAL Mr. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar and Mr. Pankaj Sahni, CEO, Medanta Hospital in October 2021.

This state-of-the-art healthcare facility will help isolate, clinically treat, clinically support asymptomatic, mild and mild to moderate Covid positive employees / other supporting staff of DIAL and their family members till they are transferred to a hospital or discharged to their homes.

This medical support facility is being managed by DIAL under the medical supervision of Medanta Hospital. Under this arrangement, DIAL is handling day-to-day operational issues, while Medanta is providing all medical support to this centre, including supervision of medical personnel, treatment protocols, patient care, support for pathology, microbiology and radiology, emergency evacuation and admission of critically ill patients at their facility, etc.

The facility consists of 15 Paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds, 18 Adult HDU beds and 52 Isolation beds are available at this centre. Each bed has the facility of oxygen concentrators for the patient.

Each bed is covered with AI-enabled camera, which monitors the vitals of the patients on the medical equipment for HDU and Isolation beds as per best industry practices. These cameras are also capable of sending alert to the nursing staff on duty. Apart from it, the cameras will also monitor all the activities inside the centre.

During the second wave of COVID-19, a lot of challenges were faced due to acute shortage of beds and oxygen concentrators in the hospitals. To avert any potential crisis during the anticipated third wave of the pandemic, this healthcare centre is equipped with all the necessary medical facilities.

The Centre is isolated as a containment zone and adheres to all applicable guidelines and norms.
