Terminal 3 to raise IGIA’s capacity by 34 million passengers a year

The world class new Integrated Terminal 3 (T3) of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi, built under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, was today dedicated to the nation by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India and Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). The Foundation Stone for T3, one of the largest airport terminals in the world, was laid by Smt. Gandhi in February 2007 and the construction was completed in a record 37 months.

Shri Praful Patel – Hon’ble Minister for Civil Aviation, Smt. Sheila Dikshit - Hon'ble Chief Minister, NCT of Delhi, Shri G M Rao - Chairman GMR Group, the lead partner of the consortium that developed the Airport, industry captains and senior officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and regulatory bodies were present at the formal inauguration of the new T3 of IGIA in Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri GM Rao, Chairman GMR Group said, “The GMR group is committed to play a leading role in the development of world class infrastructure in the country. Spread across 5.4 million sq ft, the new terminal building comprises a range of world class features and facilities designed to provide enhanced passenger comfort and convenience.

DIAL is taking every step to ensure that the passengers’ experience at T3 and IGIA as a whole is a smooth one and for that we are imparting extensive training to our staff. We shall strive continuously to enhance the range of passenger experiences.”

Terminal 3 is a 9 level building featuring 78 passenger boarding bridges which will be used for 90% of passenger embarkations and disembarkations.

Most modern technology has been put to use for check-in process and baggage retrieval at the new terminal. Common User Passenger Processing System (CUPPS) and an advanced 5 level in-line Baggage Handling System with explosive detection technology is put to use to ensure quicker processing and higher security. 6,400 m of conveyor belt is used for the totally automated baggage handling system at T3 which can handle 12,800 bags in a single hour.

Sparkling 168 check-in counters and 95 immigration counters await the passengers. Massive space inside the terminal building is surely going to add to passenger comfort, while numerous walkalators and escalators will help passengers cruise through the terminal with ease. One of the walkalator being used at T3 is claimed to be the longest in Asia at 118 meters.

T3 is ready to handle load full of passengers from Airbus A380s as well with its compatible runway, passenger boarding bridges and superior baggage handling system. About 3000 security cameras have been installed to keep an eye on every corner of the airport premises. Trained security personnel, passenger support staff and registered taxi operators with biometric cards are also being put up to ensure a much safer travel to and from the new airport terminal.

Almost 20,000 sq m of retail area offers duty free stores. Passengers are going to get the feel of a huge mall inside the terminal itself. Swanky lounges, nap and shower rooms are surely going to add to passenger delight. To satisfy different taste buds, the leaders in food and beverage industry are going to offer a variety of wining and dining options at T3.

A massive multi-level car parking right in front of the terminal building is ready to park the parking worries of passengers. With a capacity of 4300 cars, this is the largest multi-level car parking facility in India with most modern parking and security systems. Additionally a separate surface parking area is also available for 2200 cars. To ease the approach to terminal and travel through the city, 8 lane approach road to terminal and a dedicated high-speed Metro line from city centre is being completed on a fast track mode.

In addition to its passenger friendly features, T3 also has special features for passengers with special needs. These include specially designed ramps for wheelchairs, disabled-friendly toilets, reserved vehicle parking space and a special contact zone, manned by DIAL staff for unaccompanied minors and passengers requiring special assistance.

Technology will greet passengers as well as visitors to the airport at the doorstep itself. Huge LCD monitors have been installed for displaying flight information. Around 800 Flight Information Display Systems have been used for live flight information and high quality 8,000 speakers have been installed for public address system. A Master Clock System (MCS) will bring precision as all electronic controls are being brought under a single Master Clock. MCS is going to provide time reference for all computers, processor controlled devices, networks, IT applications and clocks. This is going to ensure total accuracy and make sure that no two clocks show different timings.

Further, to ensure that the terminal transitions smoothly from inauguration to commercial operations, DIAL has conducted extensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) trials. DIAL has partnered with Munich Airport, Germany, which deputed a team to conduct these trials at IGIA. The primary tasks of these trials were to ensure smooth and seamless start of airport operations. The objectives of ORAT include having a coordinated approach to prepare all airport stakeholders including the airport operators, airlines, baggage and ground handlers and security agencies, such the Central Industrial Security Force for the shift of operations to the new terminal. Besides, the trials ensure that there is streamlining of procedures, with each staff member involved with the airport knowing their roles and responsibilities. As part of the ORAT Programme, more than 10,000 staff were trained and familiarized with the new facilities and systems at T3.

The development of T3 is part of the first phase of the Master Plan for IGIA, which would enable IGIA to build a capacity for handling 60 million passengers per annum by 2010. DIAL is poised to transform IGIA into a hub connecting passengers internationally and domestically with the commissioning of T3 thereby allowing India to take its rightful place on the global aviation stage by providing passengers and airlines with the choice of an efficient, safe, secure and customer focused airport.


Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL) is a joint venture company; comprising the Bangalore headquartered global Infrastructure major GMR Group with a significant pan-India and International presence, Airports Authority of India, Fraport and Malaysian Airport.
