GMR Varalakshmi Foundation (GMRVF), the CSR arm of the infrastructure major GMR Group, has been awarded the Help Age India Silver Plate Award for the CSR works with elderly. The award aims to recognize and applaud the highest contribution given to the cause of disadvantaged older persons.
Smt.Meena Raghunathan, Director Community Services, GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, received the silver plaque and citation from Shri Mukul Wasnik, Hon’ble Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment in Delhi on 1 October, 2009 which is celebrated as the International Day of the Elderly.
This is the latest of the awards that the Foundation bagged for its work with the community. Earlier in June 2009, the Foundation was honored with the TERI Corporate award for the best CSR firm in India.
The GMR Varalakshmi Foundation has been working with the elderly through a partnership with Help Age India since 2004. HelpAge India is a leading NGO in the country, set up in 1978, and since then have been raising resources to protect the rights of India’s elderly and provide relief to them through various interventions.
Currently GMRVF and HelpAge run three Mobile Medical Units (MMU) in Hyderabad, Rajam and Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh to take health services to the doorsteps of the elderly. Each MMU is staffed with a doctor, a health care worker, a pharmacist and equipped with appropriate medicines and medical instruments. It travels from village to village making a 3 hour stop at each village. The services include regular health checkups, supply of medicines, referral services, home visits etc. Each month, over 6500 elders get the benefit of these services. Foundation also organizes special medical camps like Cardiac camps, Dental camps, and Physiotherapy camps etc. which are tailormade to address the specific health problems of the elderly.
The value added services include recreational events for the elders, ophthalmic services, distribution of disability aids like walking sticks, wheel chairs and hearing aids. Foundation also distributes food, clothes, foot wear and such necessary articles to the elderly. Senior citizens are also helped in getting identity cards through networking with the Government. The Foundation observes special days like International Day of the elderly, world health day, world disabled day, world Glaucoma day, world Diabetic day and world Asthma day etc.
