Introduction:
In an attempt to contribute towards making the city of Hyderabad cleaner and more hygienic for its people, in a Public-Private partnership with the Municipal Commission of Hyderabad (MCH), the Foundation is building and operating Pay-and-Use toilets.
These facilities, in the short time they have been in operation, have won recognition as setting a new standard for public facilities. They have been developed on the basis of thorough research and high level of professional design inputs. Constant monitoring and inspections help to keep up maintenance standards.
Objectives : To provide good quality public sanitation facilities to the public at affordable cost.
Process:
As part of branding Hyderabad, the MCH invited agencies for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for providing certain facilities on 'Build, Operate, Transfer (BOT)' basis in August 2005. GMRVF entered into MoU with MCH to construct Public Conveniences along pavements in Jan 2006.
A thorough scientific study was conducted on the existing facilities and a designer group was engaged to come up with designs. The toilets were constructed based on this design. The GMRVF Hygiene team regularly monitors not only the proper functioning of the toilets but also the cleanliness of the toilets.
At present there are six toilets functioning in Hyderabad under the first phase. Construction is underway at two locations under the second phase. There are around 1000 people using these toilets each day.
Achievement/ strengths:
The following are some of the unique features of GMRVF 'Pay and Use' toilets:
- High quality construction and user/eco friendly designs and features.
- Unique designs for adequate ventilation, separate male/female entrance, landscaping, granite cladding, etc.
- Special features like waterless urinals, child-toilets, rainwater-harvesting, automated room fresheners, soap dispensers, etc.
- Social messages for public awareness on water and sanitation issues
- GMRVF toilets have set a new bench-mark for public toilet facilities and MCH/ASCI have instructed other operators to follow many of these features.
For improving the working standards of caretakers at different locations, workshops are organized.
