The 200 MW power plant in Chennai was commissioned in 1998. The entire power generated at this plant is supplied to the Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board.
A distinguishing feature of this plant is a sophisticated sewage treatment unit, the first and only one of its kind in India. GMR Power Corporation, instead of burdening the water supply of the water-starved city of Chennai, has developed a unique method of conserving water. The plant treats 7200 cubic metres of raw sewage per day from Chennai Metropolitan & Sewerage Board to produce 5400 cubic metres of clean water for its own use. As an appreciation for its efforts toward conserving the environment the plant has received the renowned Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environmental Protection.
Furthermore, the plant releases clean water and is therefore more eco-friendly. This project has received ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications from Det Norske Veritas.

GMR Group’s Chennai Project deploys some of the most advanced processes to ensure that harmful pollutants do not escape into the atmosphere. The plant incorporates reverse osmosis for the final stage of purification. It also has a dedicated, state-of-the-art water conservation plant that processes about 1/5th of Chennai's sewage to produce water that is required to operate the plant.
