The airport beats their last year’s ASQ score!
Hyderabad, February 16, 2012: The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has been adjudged as the third best Airport in the world in the 5-15 MMPA category in Airport Service Quality by Council International (ACI). The Hyderabad Airport, led by GMR Group, has been ranked ahead of global contenders like Abu Dhabi, Adelaide, Geneva, Cape Town, Hamburg and London Luton Airports.
RGIA, led by the acclaimed GMR Group, scores higher than their last year’s ASQ ratings. While in 2010 the airport scored 4.51 overall, 2011 score led the Hyderabad Airport to 4.57 in the 5-15 million passengers per annum category. Year after year RGIA had consistently raised its standards and has made significant progress since 2009 when the score was 4.44.
Recently, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has started the second runway. The new parallel runway, 3707 mtrs long, is Code-E aircraft (such as A340/B747) compliant. The first runway is 4260 mtrs long. GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), the operator of RGIA has obtained clearances by DGCA in order to make this runway operational, making it the first green-field airport in the region with two active runways. Hyderabad Airport has now an edge over other airports in terms of runway maintenance, according to industry experts. With the activation of runway, RGIA can now continue flight operations uninterruptedly during the regular main runway maintenance of Tuesdays.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vikram Jaisinghani, CEO-GHIAL , said, “An airport’s foremost responsibility is to improve facilities for passengers and offer them a convenient and comfortable transit. We are happy that RGIA excelled in all major parameters under ASQ ratings. RGIA has also initiated innovative programmes like Volunteer Service for passenger facilitation, Installation of Photo kiosk, Introduction of international retail brands etc., which already has drawn attention and praised by passengers through Feedback Forms available at the airport. We are working hard to make Hyderabad the best airport in the region and are pleased that our perseverance has borne results.”
Accolades are not new to RGIA. Along with the past awards that RGIA had received, in 2010, at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Brussels, Belgium; RGI Airport had won the "Best Airport India" by Skytrax - the award based on the votes of more than 9.8 million travellers from over 100 different countries. The current honour bestowed upon RGIA adds another feather to its cap. Recently, the airport also received the SATTE Award for “Best Performing Domestic Airport.”
RGIA boasts of an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and 100,000 tons of cargo handling capacity per annum. The Project has the flexibility to increase capacity to accommodate over 40 MPPA and shall be developed in a phased manner. RGIA is the first Indian airport to have the Airport Operations Control Centre which acts as the nerve centre for all coordination within the airport.
This is no ordinary achievement and would not have been possible without the active involvement of all members of the RGI Airport Family. GHIAL, especially commends the efforts made by agencies like the Customs, Immigration and the Central Industrial Security Force. Also, immense effort has also been made by all our other partners like the airlines, concessionaires, housekeeping and other support staff. GHIAL also acknowledges its stakeholders, namely, Airports Authority of India who has been steady pillars of support through this entire journey.

About the Awards
The annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards recognize & reward the best airports in the world according to ACI's ASQ passenger satisfaction survey. They represent the highest possible accolade for airport operators and are an opportunity to celebrate the commitment of airports worldwide to continuously improve the passenger experience. Since its creation in 2006, the ASQ Survey has become the world's leading airport passenger satisfaction benchmark with over 200 airports participating. Its scientific methodology, strict quality control procedures and commitment to impartiality have won industry recognition and established the ASQ Survey as the global standard for measuring passenger satisfaction. The ASQ Awards are the only global airport rankings to be based on a measure of the passengers' satisfaction taken while the passenger is still at the gate. In 2011, over 350,000 passengers were interviewed prior to boarding their flight and asked to rate their satisfaction with the airport that day. To be eligible for the annual ASQ awards, an airport must have participated in the ASQ Survey every month of the year.
