Air India crew members arrive at the newly-opened Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Wednesday. Air India's AI-102 from New York became the first scheduled flight to arrive at India's largest terminal.

After a gap of 24 years, Delhi welcomed its international air travellers at a new terminal building on Wednesday. The integrated terminal building (T3), which opened on Wednesday, replaces a facility that was opened on May 1, 1986.

Delhi Airport will start its full-scale international operation from new integrated Terminal-3 on Wednesday. Announcing this at a Press conference on Tuesday, DIAL said commercial operations of all airlines will be shifted as per their scheduled timings, however, the Air India flight from New York will be the first to land at Terminal-3 to begin the commercial operations at IGI. International operations from the newly-built terminal, T3, will finally commence from today. After 4.45pm, only one arrival and two departures will take place from the old terminal T2 while the rest would shift to T3. However, a question mark continues to hang over the start of domestic operations at T3 — scheduled from August 27 — with reports that some work is still left in that part of the building. |

From Wednesday, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport will have a new address - Terminal 3. Spread over 5.4 million sq ft, T3 is the world's eight largest airport terminal and is big enough to accommodate the airport terminals of India's six other metros. Built to accomodate 34 million passengers a year, it will serve Delhi's aviation needs for many years to come. T3 can be accessed from NH 8 through Metro link.

Tomorrow, IGI Airport's international operations will finally shift to the new terminal - T3. The first airline to operate its flights from the terminal will be Air India, the national carrier. AI-102 from New York will be the first to land at 4.45pm while IC-895 to Dubai will be the first flight to take off at 6.45pm. Domestic operations of the full-cost carriers - Air India (IC), Kingfisher and Jet Airways - will move to the terminal on August 27.
