Vemagiri

Foundation started activities in this area in the year 2005. The activities are concentrated in Vemagiri, Kadiyam, Vemagirithota and Kadiyapulanka villages.

Education
Bala Badis (Pre-schools) for children in remote villages is a focus area of GMRVF. The Foundation runs 5 Bala Badis in and around Vemagiri. Over 125 children come to these Bala Badis where learning mingles with fun to prepare children for school. Apart from academics, efforts are also made to inculcate discipline and good habits in children. The children are provided with a supplementary nutritious snack every day. Regular health check-ups are conducted to monitor the child’s physical growth. Bala Badi instructors, who are selected from among the local community, are given regular training inputs to improve their skills.

The Foundation is working with 6 Government Schools in three villages around the Plant. Foundation has provided Vidya Volunteers to these schools to bridge the gap of teacher student ratio. Further, Foundation supports the schools by providing school infrastructure, work books, school stationery etc. Foundation celebrates all the days of National and International importance, conducts special events to bring out the innate talents of the children to the fore and also organizes picnics etc., to help the children go beyond the four walls to learn about their surroundings.

HIV/AIDS incidence is very high in this area and many children are affected directly or indirectly by it, Foundation has identified and is supporting, as on date, about 46 AIDS-affected students by providing them educational material (books and other stationery) and uniforms. Nutritious food materials like Rice, Jaggery, Wheat, Ragi Powder, Ground Nuts and Dexorange syrup are supplied to each child.

Health, Hygiene and Sanitation

Foundation is running an ambulance in Rajahmundry for attending emergency cases. About 10-15 people use the service every month. The Mobile Medicare Unit (MMU) run by the Foundation in partnership with Helpage India, is reaching out to 16 remote villages around the Plant to provide health care services to the elderly at their doorsteps.

General and specialized health camps are conducted in neighbouring areas and around 1500 people benefit each year through these camps.

In order to counter the menace of HIV/AIDS, Foundation conducts AIDS awareness sessions at community level in all its project villages and schools. Foundation is providing food support to 19 HIV positive students from Kadiyam Mandal.

Foundation has constructed and is maintaining a public toilet at Mutyalammapeta, Vemagiri. About 2000 people are using this facility per month.

Material support has been provided to 86 families of Vemagiri thota village for construction of Individual Sanitary Lavatories.
