Raikheda, Chhattisgarh
GMR Varalakshmi Foundation initiated its community development activities at Chattisgarh in June 2009. The activities are focused in three villages namely Raikheda, Chicholi and Gaitera in Tilda block of Raipur district.
Education
Foundation works with five Anganwadis, five Primary Schools, two Middle Schools and one Higher Secondary School in the project villages. Foundation provides Teaching Learning Materials, toys and other materials to Anganwadis to improve the quality of education. First Aid Kits are also distributed to all the Anganwadis. The support to schools includes infrastructure development, provision of Vidya Volunteers, teaching and learning materials etc. Career counseling workshops are also organized regularly for the students from Std. IX to XII. “Kidsmart Center” is opened at Raikheda in July, 2010 in collaboration with IBM and is being used by about 120 of 6-9 year age. Here, children’s potential is explored and developed through computer based learning. Children Creativity Center has been established at Gaitera catering to the needs of over 80 children of middle school. Support is also provided to the children in the form of coaching to various entrance tests.
Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
Foundation has signed an MOU with Evangelical Mission Hospital, Tilda through which it provides expert medical services to the community through the Foundation’s Village Based Dispensaries. Approximately 150 patients get benefitted every week from the dispensaries. Elderly people from Project Affected Villages are benefitted the most from these medical services. Similarly, an MOU has been signed for operating ambulance under the responsibility of Evangelical Mission Hospital.
Foundation organizes gynecological camps, general medical camps etc. from time to time. It also organizes health awareness programs in the community, schools etc. Pregnant and lactating mothers are regularly checked up and provided required medicines on weekly basis.
In addition to these, Foundation organizes awareness programs on hygiene and sanitation issues and Mitanins (local midwives) are trained on hygienic practices during delivery.
Empowerment and Livelihoods
Mapping of skills of the youth of the area has been conducted. 20 drop out youth were sponsored to NAC (National Academy of Construction) for the course on ‘Electrical House Wiring and Appliances Repair’. Another 5 candidates were sponsored for General Works Supervisor training at Construction Industry Development Council, Faridabad. Foundation has also facilitated jobs for 11 youth at RAXA security services. A vocational training program on General Electrical Works has been started recently at Raikheda itself. Along with the technical skills, this 90 days course provides spoken English and soft skills to the trainees.
135 women have been trained on SHG concepts and 9 women SHGs formed. 37 women have been trained on Mushroom cultivation out of which 33 have started mushroom cultivation as an income generation activity. 4 tailoring centers have been established to train women in tailoring skill through which more than 100 women have been trained so far.
25 women are linked with Hospital Garments Stitching program popularly known as “Hospiwear Initiative”. These women who have basic tailoring skills were trained by the Foundation in stitching hospital garments such as aprons, mask, surgery camps etc. and required sewing machines were provided to them. This is fetching them a steady income.
A skill development center for Adolescent Girls is opened at Chicholi where adolescent girls are trained in different skills along with providing them with life skill education.
A Farmers’ School was established at Raikheda in July, 2010 to provide training on improved agricultural practices for farmers. About 100 farmers are trained every month at the center. It also help like soil testing facility to farmers. The Farmers’ School helps farmers in Raikheda region to share their experiences, listen to the experiences of other farmers and discuss the viability of their crop with knowledgeable professionals from Indira Gandhi Agriculture University, Raipur.
Community Development
To deliver single window services to the communities, VDC, (Village Development Centre) a village resource hub, was established at Raikheda village. A Community Dispensary, Tailoring Training Center, Kidsmart Center and one Community Library operate from this centre. About 300 community members benefit from one or the other service every week.
Foundation organizes awareness programs to sensitize the communities on various issues apart from celebrating different days of importance such as Independence Day, Teacher’s Day, Elderly People’s Day, Children’s Day, Women’s Day etc.
To improve the reading habits of the villagers, 4 Community Libraries are established in four villages. To encourage the youth groups and to make the youth involved in community development activities, Foundation takes up various initiatives such as sponsoring cluster level sports competitions, cricket tournaments etc apart from providing sports kits to the youth groups. Aids and appliances are given to more than 50 persons with disabilities based on their need.
