Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh

Special Economic Zone

GMR group acquired a majority stake in Kakinada SEZ Pvt. Limited (KSEZ) in January 2011 and has initiated a number of activities. GMR Varalakshmi Foundation launched its Community Services Activities in this area from July 2011. Initially activities were confined to Rehabilitation and Resettlement Colony (R&R Colony) located at Moolapet village and are expanded to 20 other villages of the location.

Education
GMRVF has conducted a need assessment study in 16 schools and 14 anganwadis and based on the study, civil repair works have been initiated in 11 schools and 14 anganwadis. 16 Vidya Volunteers have been provided to 16 Govt. schools to bridge the gap in teacher-student ratio. Further, Foundation supports the schools by providing work books, school stationery, sports kits etc. Foundation is supporting 5 Anganwadis with adequate Teaching and Learning Material and other facilities. 3 Bala Badis have been set up by Foundation reaching out to about 90 children.

Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
Foundation is running an evening clinic to provide primary health care to the community. General health camps are conducted regularly by which around 1200 people benefitted so far. Specialized health check-up camps have been conducted for women and children. Several awareness programs have been conducted on different health and hygiene related issues for different sections of community. Supplementary nutrition is provided to 36 HIV+ children on a monthly basis. An 8-bed hospital and a Mobile Medical Unit are planned for the near future.

Empowerment and Livelihoods
Several women and youth from this location are being provided vocational training to give them employable skills such as tailoring, DTH technician, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning etc. Training on jute bag making has also been initiated to encourage entrepreneurship among women. Efforts are on to provide entrepreneurial skills to more number of youth and women.

Barge Mounted Power Plant
The GMR Barge Mounted Power Plant (BMPP) is a natural gas based power producing unit, commissioned in the month of June 2010 at Kakinada under GMR Kakinada Energy Limited (GKEL), around which GMRVF is working. GMRVF conducted a community needs assessment study in Yetimogga, Dummulapeta and Paralovapeta areas surrounding BMPP to understand the scope of work in its thrust areas and programmes have commenced based on this for the fisher folk living in these villages.

Education
GMRVF has appointed one Vidya Volunteer (VV) each in 3 Government Primary schools of Yetimogga, Dummulapeta and Paralovapeta villages. The VVs work towards improving the quality of education among the children by various activity based methods. GMRVF also supplied work books up to Std. IV in all the 3 schools to improve the Minimum Learning Levels (MLL) of the children. A number of National and International Days of importance are also celebrated in these schools.

With the help of a local NGO, GMRVF identified about 50 HIV affected and infected children for whom bags, books and stationery have been supplied. Some girl students among them were given bicycles to make their commute to school easier.

Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
A free daily clinic has been started in Dummulapeta where a local allopathic doctor dispenses free consultation and medicines for all community members of Dummulapeta and Paralovapeta.

GMRVF has tied up with a local NGO, Sankurathri Foundation (SF) of Kakinada, in organizing free eye camps in the 3 villages. In a recently conducted camp, about 54 senior citizens were identified as suffering from cataract and were operated free of cost in the Sree Kiran Eye Institute of SF.

To address the problem of open defecation, GMRVF is working with Kakinada Municipality to promote the construction of Individual Sanitary Latrines (ISL) in Dummulapeta village.

Empowerment and Livelihoods
GMRVF has initiated vocational trainings for identified unemployed dropout youth and also partners with other organizations in mobilizing youth for various job opportunities.

A community library has been set up in Yetimogga village that would help in inculcating reading habit among children and provide career related information for the youth.
