GMR Varalakshmi Centre for Empowerment & Livelihoods (GMRVCEL) - Bangalore
 

The vocational training centre in Bangalore was started in October 2009 to impart quality skill training along with life skill inputs to dropout youth from vulnerable families. Equal focus is given on facilitating suitable job placements for the trainees.

At present, GMRV CEL, Bangalore is running four market oriented courses-Basic Computers, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning (in partnership with Voltas), Electrical training (in partnership with Schneider Electric) and Industrial Tailoring. Along with quality training, life skills and spoken English classes, the trainees are exposed to real work situations through structured field visits. Trainees are given free bus passes to commute from their homes to the Centre and back.

Highlights
  • So far, the institute has trained 288 candidates (116 male and 172 female) of whom 226 (93 male and 133 female) are placed.
  • Life skill inputs and spoken English training are provided besides technical inputs
  • Good networking with NGOs helps in mobilizing candidates for the training
  • Partnerships have been developed with potential training partners and recruiters

Case Study:

Subhadra Stands on Her Own Feet!
Subhadra is a 19 year old girl from Bakshi Garden Slum, Bangalore. Her parents passed away when Subhadra was a little girl and she was brought up by her sister. Subhadra had completed her Intermediate. The Foundation’s community worker identified Subhadra as a suitable candidate for the Basic Computer Course at CEL B. Subhadra completed the course with commendable dedication and passion. On successful completion of training, she got placed with Metamorph learning Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore and is earning a salary of Rs 6500 per month.

Subhadra made the following statement on the day she received her first salary:

"GMR Varalakshmi Foundation has changed my life forever. From being dependent on my sister, I am now leading an independent life. I feel empowered and am confident of living my life."
