AP Roads (GMR Pochanpally Expressway Limited & GMR Jadcherla Expressways Limited)

GMR Varalakshmi Foundation started community service activities in the Roads project sites in AP in October 2007 with the commencement of work on these projects. The Foundation works intensively in villages of Ravelly, Cheigunta, Masaipeta, Kucharam, Palat, Lingareddipet and Toopran at GMR Pochanpally Expressway, and in Kotthur, Nandigram, Rajapur and Raikal villages at HMR Jadcherla Expressway. In addition, it has extension activities in several road stretches.

Apart from focusing on its thrust areas, Foundation undertakes on road safety education with help of GMR Road Project staff.

Education
As a part of the initiative to improve quality of education in the eight Govt. Schools in the villages where it is working, the Foundation has deployed Vidya Volunteers in schools where there is a shortage of teachers and has been conducting programs like evening tuitions, providing Teaching-Learning Materials (TLM), and infrastructure support. The efforts are helping around 450 students. This has resulted in improved pass percentage in SSC in these schools compared to the previous years. Summer Camps are conducted in the schools where play way method of teaching is used. These summer camps help in improving admissions in the schools as well as reducing the number of dropouts.

Health, Hygiene and Sanitation
Foundation has taken various initiatives to provide better access to good health care as well as create awareness on health. Medical camps are conducted wherein around 2,000 people get benefitted every year. Regular awareness programmes on personal hygiene, sanitation etc. help the communities to take preventive health measures. Targeting on reduced IMR (Infant Mortality Rate), Foundation has been guiding pregnant and lactating women about their health care and is providing them nutritious supplements through a nutrition centre. This has resulted in increased institutional deliveries, decreased cases of malnourishment among women and children etc.

Empowerment and Livelihoods
With a view to empower the women from the target areas, Foundation is running a tailoring centre at Toopran village. Two batches comprising of 56 women have completed their training so far. In addition to this, unemployed youth from the target villages are mobilized for availing skill trainings at GMRV Centre for Empowerment and Livelihood (GMRVCEL), Shamshabad. Meetings with youth that are regularly conducted in various villages serve as a platform to mobilize the students. So far, 22 youth have joined in various courses at GMRV-CEL from the villages.

Community Development
Foundation observes days of National and International importance like World Environment Day to make people aware about various issues. Foundation runs a community library at Lingareddypeta village. About 25 people make use of this library every day.

Road Safety
To make the project roads safer, several road safety programs have been conducted with different stakeholders including youth club members, drivers and students at various places. The programmes are conducted in places like schools, villages, dhabas and APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) depots. Foundation collaborates with local NGOs, Emergency Management and Research Institute, Police Department, APSRTC etc. Pamphlets, charts, film shows, presentations, demonstrations, street plays, workshops etc. are used for sensitizing stakeholders. About 500 people are reached every month through these programmes. To make the community aware of the menace of HIV/AIDS, regular awareness programmes are conducted for various high-risk groups.
